Oakville Choral- Christmas concert

Reflections: Rediscovering the Women of Classical Music
Oakville Choral’s concert program for December 2019 presents wonderful music by siblings Fanny and Felix Mendelssohn, and by Bach and Mozart. The program puts focus on neglected female composers, some of whom, such as Ana Magdalena Bach and Maria Anna Mozart, are known to us only as the wife or sister of a celebrated male composer. Where no works by these talented women survive, we look for reflections of their presence in the music of the men in their lives. In keeping with the long tradition of Oakville Choral’s December concerts, this program of celebratory music will also include a number of sing-along carols.

Oakville Choral’s Spring Concerts

Oakville Choral’s April 2020 concert will feature Fauré’s Requiem preceded by movements from a recent remarkable composition by American composer Craig Hella Johnson called Considering Matthew Shepard. It is inspired by the life and death of 21-year-old Matthew Shepard and was composed on the 20th anniversary of his kidnapping and murder at the hands of violent homophobes in Wyoming. It is skillfully constructed and consists of powerful and beautiful music with moments of tragedy but also joy, forgiveness and healing. There are many musical styles in this work, from baroque to country reflecting the character and culture of Matthew and his environment, yet it is remarkably cohesive with a profound expressive arc. It is referred to as a Passion, whereby the fence on which Matthew was tied and left to take his final breaths parallels too accurately a crucifixion. Following its Canadian premier in 2018, Oakville Choral will be among the first groups to bring this work to a Canadian audience.
